AVISIONOFREPENTANCE

Isawafamousfountaininmydream,

Whereshadypathwaystoavalleyled;

Aweepingwillowlayuponthatstream,

Andallaroundthefountainbrinkwerespread

Widebranchingtrees,withdarkgreenleafrichclad,

Formingadoubtfultwilightdesolateandsad.

Theplacewassuch,thatwhosoenterdin

Disrobedwasofeveryearthlythought,

Andstraightbecameasonethatknewnotsin,

Ortotheworldsfirstinnocencewasbrought;

Enseemditnow,hestoodonholyground,

Insweetandtendermelancholywraptaround.

Amoststrangecalmstoleoermysoothedsprite;

LongtimeIstood,andlongerhadIstaid,

Whenlo!Isaw,sawbythesweetmoonlight,

Whichcameinsilenceoerthatsilentshade,

WherenearthefountainSOMETHINGlikeDESPAIR

Madeofthatweepingwillowgarlandsforherhair.

Andekewithpainfulfingerssheinwove

Manyanuncouthstemofsavagethorn—

"

Thewillowgarland,thatwasforherLove,

Andtheseherbleedingtempleswouldadorn."

Withsighsherheartnighburst—salttearsfastfell,

Asmournfullyshebendedoerthatsacredwell.

TowhomwhenIaddrestmyselftospeak,

Shelifteduphereyes,andnothingsaid;

Thedelicateredcamemantlingoerhercheek,

Andgatheringupherlooseattire,shefled

Tothedarkcovertofthatwoodyshade

Andinhergoingsseemdatimidgentlemaid.

Revolvinginmymindwhatthisshouldmean,

AndwhythatlovelyLadyplainedso;
